Paul Simon (born October 13, 1941 in Newark, New Jersey) and Art Garfunkel (born November 5, 1941 in Queens, New York City) first came together in 1957 under the name "Tom & Jerry" (not to be confused with that Tom and Jerry), but rose to fame as Simon & Garfunkel nearly a decade later, mostly due to their chart-topping 1965 hit "The Sound of Silence".
This is the song which helped Simon & Garfunkel get signed to Columbia Records in the early 1960s. "The Sound of Silence" was produced by Tom Wilson. He played a very important role in the track blowing up as it was a remix he initiated in 1965, without the knowledge of Simon & Garfunkel, which proved to be more successful than the original.
